Design & Build Quality

The IntruBuster Gen2 shares Finnish design DNA with the Pistelle X-68 — both platforms originate from NXWerks Precision engineering — and the family resemblance is visible in the grip angle, CO₂ seating geometry, and overall silhouette. The Gen2 frame is reinforced polymer with a full-metal barrel and valve assembly. At ~1.8 lbs unloaded, it sits slightly heavier than the Byrna LE but handles the weight well given the grip dimensions. The quick-pierce CO₂ system means the cartridge is not punctured until the first shot, enabling safe loaded carry without gas bleed-off.

The Gen2 designation was not cosmetic: Mercury Rise addressed documented Gen1 field failures including seal degradation at maximum power settings and valve seat wear. The rebuilt valve assembly is the most significant Gen2 change and the one most responsible for the platform’s improved shot-to-shot consistency at 40+ joule output. The 6-round single-stack magazine drops free and reloads quickly. A Picatinny underbarrel rail accepts standard light and laser accessories.

Performance & Ballistics

The IntruBuster Gen2 is rated at 30–51 joules depending on ambient temperature, CO₂ fill pressure, and projectile selection. Fresh 12g cartridge at 70°F with a standard .68 cal rubber round will land near the upper end of that range; as the cartridge depletes or temperature drops, output dials back toward 30 joules. Even at the low end, 30 joules puts the IntruBuster Gen2 well above the Byrna SD (~12J) and Byrna LE (~17J).

At these energy levels, safe engagement distance is a non-negotiable consideration. Mercury Rise and the broader community recommend minimum engagement distances of 10–15 feet at full power. The 390+ FPS muzzle velocity is measured under optimal conditions; real-world velocity will vary by projectile type. Steel-core rubber rounds available for the Gen2 enable barrier-penetration capability not available from round-ball-only platforms. Effective range for kinetic impact is approximately 60 feet under standard conditions.

CO₂ System

The IntruBuster Gen2 uses a standard 12g CO₂ cartridge in a grip-seated quick-pierce configuration. The 12g format gives it a supply chain advantage over Byrna’s proprietary 8g-only SD: standard 12g cartridges are available at hardware stores, paintball retailers, and Walmart. Shot count per cartridge is lower than Byrna’s because the Gen2 draws harder on each shot — approximately 12–15 full-power shots per 12g cartridge before velocity begins to taper.

At 50 joules, the IntruBuster Gen2 is drawing CO₂ at a rate that demands fresh cartridges for any defensive deployment. Carrying multiple pre-loaded magazines alongside spare cartridges is the standard operational posture. Unlike some competitors, there is no published HPA adapter for the standard Gen2 pistol format — the platform is CO₂-only without aftermarket modification.

Projectile Compatibility

The IntruBuster Gen2 accepts the full range of .68 caliber round projectiles including rubber balls, pepper balls, PVC/nylon impact rounds, powder rounds, and the distinctive steel-core rubber rounds that are unique to the NXWerks/Mercury Rise family. The steel-core rounds are particularly notable: they concentrate impact energy at the contact point in a way that pure rubber balls do not, and are used in vehicle barrier and hard surface penetration applications where standard rubber rounds would deform and dissipate energy.

Third-party .68 cal projectiles from paintball suppliers, PepperBall, and specialty less lethal manufacturers are compatible. The barrel geometry is shared with the Pistelle X-68 ecosystem, meaning compatibility data documented for the Pistelle translates directly to the IntruBuster Gen2. Z-RAM.net and Less Lethal Ballistics explicitly list compatible rounds for NXWerks/Mercury Rise barrels.
