Design & Build Quality

The Secure 68P was designed from the ground up to solve the operational readiness problem that affects all Pull-Pierce CO₂ systems. Byrna’s Pull-Pierce requires a choice: either pre-stage by wasting a round, or carry with an unpierced cartridge and accept a slight delay on first fire. The P2P Response Ready Trigger eliminates that trade-off: the first trigger pull simultaneously handles CO₂ piercing, safety disengagement, and firing. From a cold-ready state, the Secure 68P fires as fast as any other pistol.

The frame is glass-filled polymer built by Umarex — the same manufacturer behind the TR68 and HDX 68 — which brings established production quality to the platform. The drop-free 6-round magazine is a meaningful upgrade over the Byrna SD/LE’s 5-round rotating magazine: faster reloads, easier round inspection, and no drum-related feeding geometry to misalign. Fiber optic sights at this price point are competitive with what the Byrna LE offers at $499 MSRP. The underbarrel Picatinny rail accepts standard lights and lasers.

Performance & Ballistics

The Secure 68P delivers 19 joules at up to 350 FPS using Core Defense ammunition under standard conditions. That puts it meaningfully above the Byrna LE (~17J) and dramatically above the Byrna SD (~12J) — at $229.95 vs. the LE’s $499 MSRP. Shot-to-shot consistency is within acceptable variance for a CO₂ platform; early field reports suggest the Umarex-built valve assembly maintains velocity reasonably well across the first 10–12 shots before the cartridge begins to deplete.

The published 19J / 350 FPS specification is calibrated for Core Defense PAVA rounds specifically. Third-party .68 cal rounds will produce different velocities based on projectile weight and diameter. At 60 feet, a 19-joule impact round delivers meaningful kinetic deterrence. Core Defense PAVA rounds add a 7% PAVA chemical payload on contact, which exceeds the OC concentration of most competing branded rounds including Byrna’s standard Pepper rounds.

CO₂ & Response Ready Trigger System

The Response Ready Trigger is P2P’s most commercially significant innovation. The mechanism works by coupling CO₂ piercing, safety disengagement, and the first firing cycle into a single trigger pull. The result is a launcher that can be staged fully loaded — magazine seated, CO₂ cartridge in the grip but unpierced — and brought into action with a single trigger pull without any intermediate step.

The practical implication: the Secure 68P can be stored at full readiness on a bedside table, in a vehicle console, or in a holster without the “CO₂ is bleeding” concern that affects pre-staged conventional launchers. Shot count per 12g cartridge is approximately 15–17 at rated power. Standard 12g cartridges from any supplier are compatible — no proprietary cartridge format required.

Projectile Compatibility

The Secure 68P is officially rated with Core Defense rounds — the branded P2P projectile line featuring 7% PAVA pepper fill. Core Defense offers three round types: pepper impact (7% PAVA), rubber kinetic, and inert training. The higher PAVA concentration compared to Byrna Pepper rounds (~1–2% OC equivalent) is a meaningful differentiation for users prioritizing chemical incapacitation.

Standard .68 cal round balls from the broader paintball and less lethal market are dimensionally compatible. PepperBall Live SD rounds, rubber impact balls from discount paintball suppliers, and chalk/powder rounds all function in the Secure 68P’s bore. P2P/Prepared 2 Protect’s warranty applies specifically to Core Defense ammunition; third-party projectile performance is user-assessed.
