Design & Build Quality

The DI68 is built on an AR-style platform, giving it familiar ergonomics for users with a rifle background. The Mil-Sig Generation 2 valve system is the core of its performance — the same proven valve platform used across several professional-grade mag-fed launchers. Defense Innovation offers the DI68 in multiple configurations: with a compressed air buttstock (850 PSI output), with an 88g CO₂ buttstock, and with or without an integrated slide valve. This modularity allows the same receiver to be configured for sustained fire with a remote air line or for field use with disposable CO₂ cylinders.

The 18-round magazine gives the DI68 significantly higher ready capacity than pistol-format launchers, and the interchangeable magazine design supports rapid reload under pressure. At approximately 10 lbs fully configured, it is substantially heavier than compact alternatives — a trade-off for the power system volume required to sustain 45-joule output.

Performance & Ballistics

In semi-auto mode, the DI68 delivers 35–45 joules — in the same output range as the Pistelle X-68 Gen2 but from a carbine format with 3× the magazine capacity. The full-auto selector drops output to approximately 15 joules per shot, which reduces the deterrent value of individual rounds but enables suppression-rate fire for crowd management scenarios. Defense Innovation specifies spherical .68 caliber projectiles for defensive use due to consistent feeding and ballistic uniformity; shaped projectiles are compatible but may exhibit feed variation.

The 850 PSI regulated output from the air buttstock provides consistent shot-to-shot velocity across the magazine, avoiding the pressure curve degradation that affects unregulated CO₂ setups. The 88g CO₂ configuration offers more total shots than 12g alternatives while maintaining portability without a remote line.

Handling, Controls & Ergonomics

The AR-style platform means most shooters with any rifle training will find the controls intuitive. The semi/full-auto selector is a meaningful operational feature for users in crowd management or multi-threat scenarios where sustained fire rate matters. The 18-round magazine, combined with the platform’s weight and bulk, positions the DI68 firmly in the carbine category — it is not a concealed-carry or everyday-carry option, but a purpose-built defensive or duty platform.

Ammunition Compatibility

The DI68 fires standard .68 caliber round projectiles including rubber balls, PVC/nylon impact rounds, pepper balls, and powder rounds. Defense Innovation recommends spherical rounds for defensive use; the consistent spherical profile ensures reliable cycling through the Mil-Sig Gen2 valve and 18-round magazine. The .68 caliber ecosystem is the largest available in less lethal, covering all major chemical and impact projectile types from PepperBall, First Defense, and Byrna’s .68 line.
